Al,  I looked at the route a little more with a search on MapQuest.

>From your place you can take 53 and 11 down to 74 west of Wilmington and 
follow 74 into Mullins SC.  From there it's just a few miles to I 20 then 
following the 1-20 -I 26 route you would be in Nashville in about 650 miles.

That is almost exactly the same mileage as going from your place straight 
through on I-40.
