I think you are right about detergent oils, I run it in everything also.
I prefer the mineral oils in engines that don't get run that much.  
Synthetics do lube much better, but it tends to pull moisture out of the 
air.  In a car that is run often, the engine heats up enough to 
evaporate the moisture.  In a tractor that may not get run for a couple 
of months the moisture stays in and you often see rust line at about the 
oil level.
