Rick:

Switch OFF when doing the resistance (ohms) check. Another way to do this
check with the meter in voltage mode is: have the switch on, turn the engine
to where the points are closed and then measure the voltage at the points
side of the coil. Points open 6 volts, points closed 0 volts. If the voltage
reads anything other than zero when the points are closed, the points are
not closing properly, dirty or are corroded. The points short one side of
the coil to ground when they are closed. If the closed point contact
resistance isn't zero then things won't work right or at all. I suspect your
points just need a good cleaning. If you don't have a point file, then use
abrasive cloth between the closed points to burnish the mating contacts. If
they have been setting around for a period of time it may take a little
extra cleaning. When you break open the points manually with the switch "on"
you should see a spark at the point contacts.
