Dave: It is possible the stud in the canister (oil filter body) is not fully vertical and thus prevents the cover from dropping down? The end plate in the oil filter bottom (cover) could be catching on the stud theads and keeping it from coming off. The stud on my 1950 "B" is not straight (vertical) and I have to center it a bit when removing he cover. Ken
