[Ford-ferguson] 12 volt conversion

Don`t want to start a long winded conversation about COILS and Resistors
, but , if the coil doesn`t have a BUILT in resistor ,and some doesn`t ,
then you need to use a EXTERNAL resistor . As for my personal preferance
, I would use a EXTERNAL resistor and a early style FORD 12 volt starter
solenoid . On the solenoid , you will have two SMALL studs , one being
marked with " S " meaning that is the one to hook up to the starter
pushbutton or the start terminal on the ign. switch and the other will
be marked " I " which needs to be hooked up at the battery side of the
coil , therby , bypassing the resistor when the tractor is started . In
other words , when you start the engine , you monentarly BYPASS the
resistor for the FULL 12 volts to give you that extra boost , and as
soon as your engine starts and you take your finger off the starter
button , the solenoid returns to its nutural position , and now you are
running the engine THROUGH the resistor with the proper voltage drop .
P S , there is a company making a 12 volt coil for the front mounted
dist . and it is kind of pricey .
Hope this helps some .
