[AT] computer problems off topic

The little devices are not intended to be used as permanent backup. The
idea is for easy transport of information between computers. I don't have
one but my son Leo wanted some Photos from my computer and whipped out his
little thumb drive and had them back in his pocket and ready to take with
him in a flash.

George said his was used to quickly transfer information between computers.
Making data portable on an easily handled device is the objective.

I have a small USB connected media reader for downloading pictures from the
digital camera, that can read four different types of cards. This can also
be used to write files from the computer to the memory card very much like a
thumb drive. However the thumb drive like a turtle has its own protective
cover. I have no idea how long the information will remain accurate on flash
memory media. The Compact Flash cards are rated for write speed and the
faster ones command a higher price and are recommended for video clips with
a digital camera.

I am not sure I understand what these thumbdrives are good for. Maybe
they are improved now, but previously you could not put anything
important on them because they were unreliable and often caused peoples
computers to crash.. I just bought a new dual layer dvd writer for
$65. It will write 4.7 gig on a 50 cent dvd or 9gig on a more expensive
dvd. It also writes cd's which are about 10 cents. Both of which are
reliable. It doesn't seem like you could back up much on 256 meg or 512mb.
