Yes, the rear bearing is a Timken tapered roller bearing -

I haven't seen the front bearing (I never removed the cap) but the parts
book says it is a ball bearing.  From the ease at which the splined shaft
can be made to move back and forth in this bearing (~ a tenth of an inch in
the old transmission) I would think it almost has to be a thrust bearing
(but, as I say, I haven't seen it so I can't say for sure) -

First off we need to know what type of Ball and Roller bearings that  you
have.  Not all of them require or will except a pre load.  I am  assuming
that
the roller bearing is tapered and since it calls for pre load then  the ball
bearing must be a thrust type. If not then there is no way to pre load
them.
