[AT] Now O.T. - Backing up tractor pictures and degenerating into a ramble.

I love it. If James Michener was writing "Centennial" today (I realize
that he's dead) he'd have made use of a computer for the genealogy that
is a part of that novel.

Steve, I've had FTM since version 1.0. I've worked with every version
of it over the last 20 years or so and just installed FTM 2005 late last
month. Like Farmer, I've used a whole bunch of genealogy software over
the years -- good and bad. I just went out on Cyndi's List
(www.cyndislist.com) and did a quick review of the software links that
she has posted. Some of the old software that I panned as being
worthless back in the early days is still around -- and still being
panned. On FTM, the fundamental software works the same regardless of
which version you're running. The differences are in the number of
add-on disks that you get and the number of on-line perks that you are
allowed to exercise. For fundamental work in a family history, the free
version of FTM is perfectly satisfactory.

BTW, the reason I try to keep up with the software versions is because I
write regularly about keeping track of family histories on a computer
for the local genealogy society and I go on the road doing "Dog and
Pony" shows about it.

Larry

	Hi Steve:

I make it a rule to almost never buy software... I find that I
can often get
free software that is as good or better than a lot of stuff for sale.
All you
have to do is look around and try stuff. I tried a whole herd of family
tree
programs and let me tell you that most of them were trash. Absolute
trash that
someone should have been ashamed of... Others were good and some quite
good. I
picked the free version of Legacy Family Tree because I felt it was the
best
for my use. I had already used some old oddball programs I had picked up
at
flea markets but never liked them. After transfering data over and using
the
free version of Legacy for almost a year (I started with version 4 then
updated
to 5.0) I then decided that I liked it so well that I bought the full
version
including the printed manual. Thats right... Me... farmer the
cheapskate,
bought the full version... :-) I have never regretted it.

Heck, I think you could even keep track of old tractors with
it... ;-)
