Ralph,
My 1st big engine was in my 61 dodge 383 with 325 HP I think that was about
what the factoy wanted us to know this car would would burn the tires from 0
to 50 mph when it shifted to 2nd and then there was slam in back as it jumped
from 50 to 70 and shifted to 3rd from there up it was power as you did all
you could to hold on and wait for the power to give up I never found out as I
only took it up to 105 where I let up and figured that was fast enough for me.
My second dodge was not so fast or so powerful it was a 64 dart with a 273
V-8 I took many a trophie at the drags with one though. It ran real god in it
class up against many cars that had twice the engine but heavier .
I then owned two vehicle with 440s in them a big old 68 Chrysler new Yorker
and a 30 ft. dodge motor home. Both engines perform very good when you put
the metal to floor. That big motor home passed a lot of smaller ones on long
grade 6 or 7 hills.
I used to race back in the mid 60's when dodge had the 426 Hemi's in them I
can still remember seeing stock cars screaming down the tract in 10 seconds
at 140 mph. I once read where a car mag tied one down an found it to have
over 600 hp before the wheels came loose on the rollers. Its no wonder they quit
building these things its only a wonder us kids weren't all killed driving
them.
You really had to grow in those days to believe what these cars were capable
of. The big Fords and the Chrysler cars were not for the weak of mind to
drive.
Boy would I like to put a 426 Hemi in my LA, now that would be a pulling
tractor.
