Dave, is this a factory trailer package? Just curious since I just got
an 02 Ford with factory trailer wiring.
I've had a similar situation several years ago. I use the round 6 pole
connector for our utility trailer. One time I had a fuse blow like you
did. On mine the wire set screw fell out or loosened enough to touch
the metal case and short when the light went on. After I found the
problem and corrected it I wrapped electrical tape around the plug
internals. I figured this would prevent the screws from shorting.
One thing that may have contributed is that it may have a power lead to
the plug. I've wired them on my tow vehicles so it can charge/maintain
the battery on the camper while in tow. I always put a fuse at the
battery connection to protect from a short further back.
