The oil pump is driven from the camshaft. Between the vertical shaft driven 
by the cam, and the shaft going to the oil pump is a cast coupling, designed 
to break. The primary reason it breaks is water in the oil has frozen and 
prevents the oil pump from turning. This cast coupling is 
observable/replaceable by removing the crankcase cover. The coupling 
prevents damage to the camshaft and/or oil pump due to water in the oil.
It could be other things, but that is my first guess.
