I made an interesting discovery today while doing a bit of headlight repair
on the Cockshutt 40 that might just help someone else who is fixing up old
tractor headlights. These headlights are typical of most old six volt bulb
and reflector lights with the glass lens held on by a metal band. The
original (rubber?) gasket on this headlight had deteriorated to hard brittle
stuff that broke on disassembly. I was going to put it back together without
it but the lens was now loose in the headlight. Duct tape? Then I saw on the
workbench, a large o ring. It was leftover from an oil change, the gasket
for the filter cannister. I don't usually replace these gaskets so
accumulate a fair number of them. This o ring just happened to be the exact
diameter to fit behind the headlight lens and the whole thing went together
perfect with a good tight fit..
Best of all, this repair did not cost a thing.
