I was a Machinist's Mate on the USS Wainwright 1971-73. All the nuts and
bolts used on the high-pressure (1200psi) steam lines were monel. Making
rings from spare nuts was one way of passing time on night watches. They
could be polished up to look just like silver. Guys would give them to
their wives, daughters, or sweethearts. Some would make up a couple for
whatever port was our next stop. 8>)

A friend of mine's father was a machinist on some ship in WWII
At some point in time she broke a shaft. Friend's father took a piece of
the broken shaft which was monel (sp) and made two signit style rings. He
gave them to his two sons. I don't know if they still wear them but they
used to.
