Ted,
Haze Gray & Underway http://www.hazegray.org/ has a good operational history
of the Hoggatt Bay at http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/carriers/cve75.txt .
There is at least one WWII picture of her at that site, also.
I recently read the book "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" by James D.
Hornfischer about the Battle Off Samar. Several of Hoggatt Bay's sister
ships were in the midst of this battle to cover the Leyte Gulf landings in
the Philippines. There is a web site devoted to this battle at
http://www.bosamar.com/ . I have to tell you, I would not have been
comfortable on a slow ship with only one 5" gun, especially when the
kamikazes were attacking. You guys did a fantastic job.
