Frank:

Listen. The way eBay works in this case is as follows:

He first bid $100.00.

Then he came back a few minutes later and wanted to either raise his bid to
see where the reserve was set at or wanted a higher bid for proxy purposes.

Then he came back the second time and inserted a higher bid that eBay
interprets as a proxy bid. But he was bidding against himself.

However, Now, not true some time ago, eBay will allow you to bid against
yourself meaning if you are the only bidder and you come in with a second or
third higher bid the bid amount shown won't be any more than the first bid.
Now if someone comes along and bids higher than the first $100 bid then it
will look at the original bidders proxy bid and raise it the amount
necessary to beat the other bidder or go to the maximum amount of the first
proxy bid. Then if the other bidders bid is higher than the first proxy bid
the second proxy bid will take over until it is exceeded by another bidder.

In the past, I don't remember how long ago, if one did what he did, bidding
against his own bid, the bid would go to the next increment. eBay doesn't
work that way any more.
