True as far as it goes.   However right now most gasoline is made from 
cracking heavy crude (diesel and heavier).    Back in the 1890s gas was 
separated out of the crude.  Today the gas in crude is just a tiny fraction 
of the gas we need, so the heavy grease is made into gasoline.
