Yeah that is ok if you use the type that is made for engine gaskets and only 
put on a thin film of it.   Just enough to cover the surface.  You don't 
want enough that it will squeeze out and the excess get into your engine. 
If you prefer you can use something like Permatex form a gasket.  It is 
messy but to use but works well.  Permatex also makes the silicone based 
sealants.
