An interesting site showing a study by the USDOE:
http://www.transportation.anl.gov/pdfs/TA/58.pdf

Near future net energy balance of Ethanol is 20-25 kBTU per
gallon. Interesting if boring reading.

On a conversion to ethanol, you have to significantly raise the compression
ratio to take advantage of ethanol. F/A ratio for gasoline is 14.7:1, for
Methanol 6.4:1, and for ethanol 9.0:1.

Some interesting numbers the energy content in each fuel per gallon.
Gasoline	115,400
Methanol	56,500
Ethanol	75,000

Fuel equivalency to one gallon of gasoline
Gasoline	1:1
Methanol	2.04:1
Ethanol	1.54:1

Therefore it takes just over 1 1/2 gallons of ethanol to do what one gallon
of gasoline does.

One more number. For every gallon of ethanol you burn the federal
government forks over $.54.
