Sounds like some of us are making a little bit to big
of a deal out of this. It sounds like you only need
nuts. Nuts or bolts can be relatively easy to make on
a lathe. First measure again to confirm the size and
pitch of the stud. Remember that 12 tpi was very
popular on old steam engines. 1/2-12 has gotten a lot
of folks in trouble. When you are sure that the
thread is 11/16-11 you can move forward with making
new nuts. If you still have any of the old nuts left
use them for reference for stock size and thickness.
My tap drill chart shows .597"-.606" dia for 11/16-12
(close enough for 11/16-11). Get some square bar
stock (makes square nuts) probably 1" or 1.25" and
cut it to about 1/2" lengths (use old nuts for
reference) Drill your tap hole to size in the center
of each blank. Get a tap and tap the hole. Deburr
and chamfer the new nut to look like other square nuts
on the machine. If a tap is to expensive or
unavaialable you will single-point the threads with
your lathe. If you are going to make the threads on
the lathe be sure to also drill the hole on the lathe.
Don't disturb the set up of the part between drilling
and threading. Let us know how you come out on this
project.
