Mark-- and all-- you reminded me of my mother's special Depression-era 
dessert:   White rice and 'hardsauce'.   Hardsauce was just a 
combination of light-brown sugar and butter, mixed together, heated 
slightly and poured over the rice.   What a taste!     This before we 
knew sugar and butter were not our friends.  

I am proud to admit that I am a Vermonter-- and that I regularly eat 
grits.  Plain, with just some salt.  MMMMMM!   (Not quite in the same 
league as rice and hardsauce though.)     O.K., so my first wife grew up
