Here in coastal Central California, we don't have Redbuds so correlation
would be difficult! But this year is different than most years for all of
the blossoms. We had a wet winter but without the flooding that usually
accompanies wet winters. The rains started early and just kept coming, but
with gaps in between just long enough to avoid escess runoff. The
wildflowers were the best in possibly ever! As far as tree blossoms go, the
Almonds that usually blossom in February were about a week early in late
January. The Apricots started about two weeks early in early February and
continued for at least three times as long as usual. The cherries started
blossoming and unlike the usual two week bloom are still blossoming a month
later. Very odd.
But the crop will probably be very light this year because of all of the
rains. The asparagus started nearly a month early in January! So,
correlation would seem to be NOT a factor. Expect gaps in the vegetable
supply this spring as the rains made it impossible to plant at certain
times. Also, the cost of diesel has seriously affected all of us. Prices had
better be a LOT higher!
Good luck to all of the farmers this year, hopefully it will be a
successful year.
