Thanks. Gun Bluing was one of the products I was considering but never
having had any experience with it, I did not know where to turn. I read the
paragraph with it indicating oil on top of the bluing but I think that would
attract dirt/dust and defeat the purpose.

Too thick for what your doing. For shafting your probably limited to
bluing or hard chrome. If the shafts have to slide at all any paint will
cause binding. I would probably use bluing/blackening solution like
Oxpho-Blue. easy to apply and could be touched up easily when required.
