Of course they'll look at you strange!  :-)

There are two kinds of lime.  For your purpose you want un-hydrated lime or 
quicklime.  Hydrated lime won't do what you want.

In another life eons ago I operated an autoclave hydrator to convert the 
former to the latter.

At our place, we collect the "leftovers " and dump them down woodchuck 
holes.  Understandably, they don't like it and leave!
