I know you purchased the fax machine to use it, but you should consider the service e-fax.  You don't need an additional phone line, or try to trick your existing line into determining the type of inbound call.  The service receives faxes and forwards them to you via e-mail.  Particularly good if you travel.

The only significant downside is the occasional lack of immediacy you get with having your own fax.  There can be a time delay, depending on how busy their server is, between the sender sending and you receiving the e-mail.

  I'm setting up a home office for my new job and I am having fax 
  troubles.  In the past, to get a fax, I'd need to turn off the answering 
  machine and turn the fax on to "answer."  After getting the fax, I had 
  to turn the answer off on the fax machine or else, while speaking on the 
  phone, the fax would pick up and start with it's whistling, thus 
  interrupting our conversation.

   How can I make it so the fax will pick up with a fax and the answering 
  machine will pick up with a voice call.  Hopefully the list can help.
