Looks neat.
That is an unbalanced D type slide valve. A cutaway drawing can be found
here. http://oldenginehouse.users.btopenworld.com/slide.htm

On taking my engine apart (a little horizontal stationary) I was able to
unscrew the rod from the crosshead and pull the piston and rod out. Getting
the rod separated from the piston was the problem. The rod was 1 3/16"
diameter turned down to 1 1/4" were it was pressed into the piston then had
a 1 1/8" diameter thread for the nut. Not sure why they bothered with the
nut as they enough press fit that I could not move it without damaging the
thread. Since the rod had some large rust pits I drilled and bored to
relive some of the pressure so I could push it out. Then I made a new rod
but instead of a straight press fit I put a taper on the rod and a matching
taper on the piston so that I could get it apart when I have to.

Thanks,
Andre' B. Clear Lake Wis.
