Came across this in a 1847 publication..
"A letter-writer in Wales mentions having seen a
sturdy looking dame, with a load of wood on her head,
and a child tied on her back, a cudgel under her arm,
with which she was driving a number of cows, while her
hands and fingers were busily employed in knitting
stockings. The writer does not specify that the dame
was singing devotional hymns at the same time, though
she might have done it."
