[Steam-engine] Safety valves...now firing

I noticed a little something when following this
thread last week.  Someone mentioned that closing the
damper on a coal fire would kill the grates but it was
OK for a wood fire.  This is new to me.  Can someone
expand on this?  I have a lot to learn about proper
firing methods.
