[AJD] 8 Volt Batteries

You should be able to safely hook it up if you put a volt meter across the
battery while you charge it. Keep an eye on it, when it gets over about 11
volts I'd turn the charger off else you'll cook the battery.

This will put a bit of a strain on the charger but if you have a choice of
charging rates, which you seem to have, I'd think keeping it at a low rate
would protect the rectifiers from getting overloaded.

If you want a more permanent charging arrangement, I'd experiment with a
resistance in series with the battery and charger. You can measure the
voltage across the resistance and see if you're close. Lessee, a 12 volt
charger should put out about 15 volts, you want about 11 for the battery, so
the drop across the resistance should be about 4 volts. I'd start with a
generator field coil and see if that's close; just a hunch, I have no idea
what resistance would be appropriate.

I guess the real solution is to fix the charging system on the tractor.
