The gauge has two post.  One is for the hot wire and the other comes from
the sending unit. What your gas gauge is actually measuring is how much
groung you have from the sending unit.  If it is six volt then use a six
volt battery if 12 volt then use the 12.  The only way you will fry it is if
you put a six volt gauge on a 12 volt battery.  Let me know how it turns
