Since this topic of hard to find pistons has come up, I found a nice little book at the Portland show this year, "Making Pistons".  The author, Stephen Chastain, has written a nice series of books on casting simple stuff, and this 64 page book gives a very nice description of piston design, and how to cast and machine pistons.  His email is stevechastain at hotmail.com, and the book is $11.95 (I think).
