[Farmall] A won't crank with hand crank

Sounds like the mag impulse isn't working.  Can you hear it click when you crank it over?

  I have a 1940 A and I finally got it running. It runs good,doesn't smoke and idles good. Only problem is it will only crank if you pull it off .( in 3rd gear about 15 feet fires right up) I've tried the hand crank before and after it has ran with the same result ( it hits but won't run) Anyone have any suggestions?
