Gene and Larry,

I cut the stringers for the Aeronca from Douglas fir.  I was able to buy
stair tread stock in a long length.  It was edge grain, straight, and
absolutely clear.  It is much harder and heavier than cedar... and I'm sure
much stronger.  All wood on the fuselage was replaced.

If you're lucky enough to find some, I'm sure it would do the job.
