Others with more experience probably have methods of long term storage that
insures tire not losing shape.

The main problem with old tires is that they dry rot they loose the liquid
that keeps them in good solid condition. After a few year of lying around they
just loose their strength in the rubber and will come apart under heavy use.
The only way I know to keep them in good shape is to pack them in water,
Salt water actually works quite well for this. But they will not last long after
you take them out so either way the best thing to do is to use them while
you can and then turn them into something else.
