Hi --
Dad used a set of old coal stove grates (cast iron) in his 6" scale model
traction engine, see -
http://www.smithmachineworks.com
However, due to the limited height of the ashpit they tended to overheat and
sag after several years of usage. We later switched to steel bars after
exhausting the supply of stove grates, but steel did not last as long as
cast iron as I recall.
The engine is now in my brother's care and he finally got fed up with the
problem and bought a set of stainless steel bars for it. End of problem,
BUT $$$ EXPENSIVE $$$!!!
Best wishes

Subject: [Steam-engine] Grates
Has anyone ever had to replace grates because that were burned out or
missing? Can they be recast by using another set as a pattern or can they
be fabricated out of steel?
