[Steam-engine] Long staybolts

At steam school, The guys from B&B showed us how the
shorter stays are installed.  The bolts are basically
all thread rod which are trimmed off and hammered
over.  How does a long stay work?  My boiler has 2
stay bolts about 7.5 ft long.  Surely they didn't use
a tap that long.  Were the bolts threaded for the
whole length?  How were they installed?
