Your Allis engine has wet sleeves.  What that means is that the sleeve that 
the piston runs in (the cylinder bore) is press fit into the block and 
surrounded by coolant.  It is sealed at the top and bottom of the sleeve 
with an O-ring.  That could be the source of your leak if the bottom o-ring 
is leaking.  It could also be a freeze crack as you suspect.  I'd try some 
good stop leak and see what happens.
Also, you can buy some coolant additive that glows under black light to help 
you track down the leak if you have to pull the engine apart.   I believe 
you can buy stop leak with the dye  in it.
