The main problem with old tires is that they dry  rot they loose the liquid 
that keeps them in good solid condition. After a few  year of lying around they 
just loose their strength in the rubber and will come  apart under heavy use. 
The only way I know to keep them in good shape is to pack  them in water, 
Salt water actually works quite well for this. But they will not  last long after 
you take them out so either way the best thing to do is to use  them while 
you can and then turn them into something else.
