[AT] OT Barn floor question

This is from my 2nd gt. grand aunts book on the Oregon trail and growing up  
in Oregon.

Adam's little log cabin  was poor, a bed nailed against the wall in the 
corner, a table and a few poor  stools that tilted and teetered on the uneven 
puncheon floor, a fireplace of mud  and sticks, sometimes it smoked. There was only 
one window and the door had a  string for a latch. But it was a home, Sarah 
Jane saw to that herself and she  knew exactly how it was done. She had Adam 
and the wee chap, David, what more  could anyone ask for in a new world?
