[AJD] 2010 gas-Dare I buy it?!?!?

Brandon:

The 1010 and 2010 were the first versions of the small end New Generation
tractors that were built by the Dubuque factory as opposed to the 3010 and
4010 that were produced by the Waterloo factory. Any completely new product
has birthing problems but the 1010 and 2010 had more than their fair share.
I have been repeatedly advised to stay away from the 10 series Dubuque
tractors due to the number of infant mortality problems they had. The later
1020 and 2020 models fixed many of the initial problems but not all. Even
the 3010 and 4010 had some birthing problems but not nearly to the extent of
the 1010 and 2010.

The 2510 was also the first model of a later particular series of tractors
and came out much later than the other 10 series but I have not generally
heard as many problems with this first of a series tractor which came out of
the Waterloo factory, not Dubuque, and was a kind of hybrid tractor using a
3010 frame and a smaller engine, etc. The later 2520 also included some
added features and fixed some of the 2510 shortfalls.

My hazy recollection right now is the major problems with the 1010 and 2010
were related to the hydraulics and the gas engine. However, I have not owned
one so I don't have any personal experience. Just what I head from the grape
vine. I suspect JD offered upgrade kits for the 10 series to bring them up
to the level of a 20 series, in the weak areas, but one would need to do the
research to find out what the update kits consisted of and whether they have
been installed in a particular 10 series tractor.

For some reasons a given particular tractor can turn into a lemon and others
of the exact same configuration don't give trouble at all. Kind of like
Ford's 6.0 Liter Diesel truck engine. Many owners had a lot of trouble with
engine and Ford in some cases replaced the whole truck to try to keep their
customers happy. I heard again recently that Ford is still having some
trouble with this diesel engine but seem to be on top of them now. They must
be because the 7.3 Liter diesel engine is no longer available.

For reasons, which are known in detail by some, the Dubuque 10 series
tractors do not have a very good reputation. I think I have some reference
material here that goes into some of the issues but they are not on the top
of my head right now. If needed, I could do some more research. Hope this
helps.

Brandon,
I know nothing about a 2010. I do know my Dad and brothers have
had a
gas 2510 for a number of years. The reason they have had it so long is
that no one wants it. It has spent more hours in the shop than in the
field. I think they have worked on every part of that tractor, some
parts several times. If a 2010 is anything like the 2510, I would stay
away from it were it me. Just my 2 cents and probably not even worth that.

ps: a friend has a 2510 diesel and has had no problems what-so-ever. He
just loves the thing.

need for a "work" tractor (3pt, 1 set of remotes, power steering, wide
front). They want $3500 for it. I'm hoping to get it a little cheaper, one
rim is a bit on the rusty side, and the tires will last a while, but
definitely aren't new. It looks pretty good (a recent repaint), but that
doesn't matter. Of course I need to hear it run, and drive it around, make
sure everything works, etc!!!

problems, but weren't these mostly diesel problems and not gas? In any case
to see if the sleeve deck is bad...just look out for water and oil in the
wrong spots? Any other notorious problems?
