Karl most ether or starting aids now will give a specific amount of spray
per shot. One shot per crank of engine . Besure engine is cranking when you
hit the spray so it takes it all in to the cylinders it doesn't take much
unless you are in alaska.

We used to get the ether in small Red plastic bulbs that you cut with a
knife and then sprayed them into the intake. One bulb per start and it hled ten
times what you needed. The rest was just wasted.
 that was back in 1960

The spray cans are sure nicer HUh.

My friends IH has a built in system that you just hit the button to give it
one spray usley starts right up but its not cold here.

My Kubota has glow plugs and it takes about 15 seconds to warm them up
enough on a cold morning. Sure glad i bought that new battery last year and I
remember to turn the key off after shutting down.
