David
On the K series IH moved the plate a few times.
Generally the plate is on the kickplate inside the cab by the drivers feet where it was generally ruined by being kick and water from boots.
Since the cab was considered an option as well as the bed they both also had a ID or serial plate. the cab's is usually on the driver's side of the seat base and the beds is on the left rear side of the bed.
The larger trucks K6 and larger sometimes had the truck ID plate on the front of the seat base as well.
Generally by the time the KB series came out the serial data plate was on the rt side of the firewall.
On these early trucks the chassis number is the serial number as the term vin had not be invented yet.
One good thing is IH also stamped the number in on the outside of the left front frame rail usually between the front bumper and the center of the axle. The numbers are not big nor are they deep but with some good wirebrushing and angled light they can be found.
Unlike other manufactures number system there really isn't much to decode from them other than model and in what order it came down the line. As with the tractors they generally started at 501 and ran consecutive till the model was dropped.
For more info go to http://www.oldihc.org/index.php .
As a side note the K1 -K5 and KB-1 -KB-5 all shared the same cab and many other parts so stuff interchanges well. The Larger trucks K/KB-6 and larger share almost nothing with the smaller series.
Good luck with your project.
