Robert, 
 You're right the CA cultivators don't use a spring. The
problem probably is the pivot at each front side. About 
1-1/4" maybe. Get your oil out and or WD40 and spray 
this point. They get sticky and won't work. After a while
of pulling them up with the hydraulics and pulling them
down manually they should start loosening up.

Charlie the "CA" does not  use a spring. Mine will lock up in the up 
position when I don't have the adjustments on the pump set right.Never
had a 
cylinder come apart before though.
