Thanks Dean! Why did I not see that on my manual. I kept overlooking that. I checked my repair manual and it only said steel ball. I just ordered some gaskets and parts yesterday from my local JD dealer, I will call back and order that also.

Thanks again
David

I have sent you the appropriate page from the parts catalog via private
email. Yes, it looks like "key 7" is what you are missing. Don't have the
part unfortunately. The part number is 405R and is still available from JD:

Subject: [AJD] JD 'M' Steering Adjuster

I have a JD 'M' that I am working on. My question involves the nut for the
steering shaft adjuster. JD part no. AM 439T. I have the shaft, nut,
washers, and snap ring for the unit, however there is one part missing. I
am assuming that there is a steel ball that goes between the shaft and nut
to make the two connect when spinning the nut to adjust the steering rod.
Has anyone on the list taken this unit apart to know what I might be
missing. And also does anyone have the extra part? Thanks in advance for
the help
