I would check things in this order.

1. Too much antifreeze?
2. Fan Clutch. "Easy spin it if it spins freeley then that is the
problem" Should be able to hear it engage when truck is hot.
3. Thermostat
4. Plugged Radiator
5. Head Gasget
6. Water pump.
7. Transmission "Slipping?"

In my high school days I had a water pump impeller come apart. I was on
a trip with the ROTC. It started overheating. We pulled the thermostat
and it still overheated. I found if I tied the hood open and drive under
45 it would not heat so I was able to drive it home.

The next day I removed the water pump and the impeller fell out in pieces.
