[AT] Working a tractor at night

There was always something I liked about doing farm work with
a tractor at night. I don't know what there is about it but there is
a peaceful feeling about it that is hard to match. It always seemed
like you were working inside a black ball that just kept rolling along
with the tractor and machinery inside it. Lights in the days when I
spent my time in the fields were nothing special and just lit up the
area just to the front and rear of the tractor and that was it. Being
as you knew where you were and didn't need lights that much anyhow,
all that was really needed was to be able to see where you went the
last time around and by looking back, how the machinery was doing.
The exhaust seemed more responsive to changes in condition and was
more musical at night too. You could also see sparks at times and a
soft red glow when the tractor was pulling hard.

I was reminded of these things last night because just at
dusk, I decided to disc the garden so I can plant sweet corn today.
I took the little JD 40-S and an old horse drawn disc, turned on the
lights and went down and put it to work. Used 3rd gear, opened the
throttle and listened to the sound of that 2 cylinder JD engine as
it got at it's business and barked at me. I like the sound of old
tractor engines but that two cylinder sound is a special thing to
me. Working the garden is not the same as working a large field in
the Great Plains but a little imagination helped me along. Anyhow,
the tractor and the old disc did a good job and not only did I get
the garden ready for planting today, but I jogged some memories along
the way.
