Larry:

I suspect the big opening went away when they had to go to a pressurized
system. Prior to that they used a Thermo-syphon cooling system.  I believe
the pressurized cooling systems got caused by the lack of copper during WWII
and the Korean war when the radiator cores had to be made from steel rather
than copper.

Just out of curiosity, when did John Deere get away from the big wide
filler opening on the top of the radiator?  Was that something that went
by the wayside when Dreyfuss and company did the styled models?  That
wide opening sure made it convenient to fill the cooling system with a
mop bucket of water straight out of the irrigation ditch.

Your' chickens - and their eggs if they were layers - probably weren't
deficient in Iron and Copper -

Draining the radiator every time the engine is shut down - i.e., not
letting
cold water stand in the radiator/engine - would, I think, result in a
cleaner cooling system -

We used to start the tractor, add water, feed, then shut the tractor off
and
drain the water.  At least once a day, maybe twice.

Then watered the chickens with the hot water.....

That WAS non-permanent!
