[AT] OK boys, I need help!! OT Computer stuff

Humm. That's interesting. I have four different scanners all working
under XP -- all using TWAIN -- all running interchangeably as either
directly accessed hardware or through plug-ins to other software. I'm
running a half dozen different software packages that use the plug-in
technique for these scanners. I have not had to use the compatibility
mode to make them run. I treat them as Plug-and-play devices all the
time.

I know all about the new driver problem with XP. When I upgraded from
Windows ME last year, I ended up downloading 31 new drivers just to make
the computer run. I needed everything -- monitor, audio, mouse,
keyboard, fan control, CD drive, floppy drive, modem, USB, firewire,
PCMCIA, Memory stick, network, and nearly 20 others that were not so
clearly labeled. I did have to download one new driver for a printer,
and the scanner driver may have been bundled with that, but when all the
dust settled the TWAIN interface still showed up as a plug-in under
either the ACQUIRE or the IMPORT commands and still functioned. Of
course, it's possible that the new OS simply left the old command
structure in place and substitutes new commands that are hidden from me
as a user, but it doesn't act like that.

If the driver uses TWAIN. Most older scanners do. XP does not support
TWAIN. TWAIN was a 16 bit app. NT Does not support it.

For that reason a new driver is required. That is what happened on my
Canon G1 and G2 camera. I had to download a new driver application. The
flash memory is used like a disk drive. The software accesses the images
by going out to drive # and looking for files.

My Microtec scanner uses both Twain and the parallel port SCSI emulation
interface. For that reasion it will never be supported under XP. "That
is
the scanner plugs into the printer port."

Windows 2000 does support 16 bit apps. It should support more of those
devices than XP.

Both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 are nearing end of life. When that
happens all the patches may go away. Also they will not make any more
security patches for those systems.

Windows 95 is in that fix. No support at all.

Larry,
Did you try the NT4 or 2000 drivers for that scanner? They should work.
