[AT] Names that have become generic

Dean,
I seem to recall my Dad saying when I was a kid that there was a man named
Bendix who was born in our state (which was Illinois) and that one of the
things he invented was a starter drive - when the starter armature started
rotating the rotational force along the axis caused the starter pinion to
move out onto the flywheel ring gear. I remember one of the first times
that I saw a starter which had the solenoid driven pinion and I referred to
this drive as a Bendix and Dad corrected me and said No, only the drives
that relied on the rotational force of the armature were Bendix drives. I
admit my memory is getting a bit fuzzy on this - this is only one of many
things I would ask Dad to tell me again if he was here -

To really show my ignorance, all this time I really thought that part was
called a "Bendix"
