[AT] Dain, unveiling at the JD CC

Larry:

We got to attend the Dain unveiling at the JD Collector Center on John
Deere's 200th birthday. JD purchased this tractor from the Deceased owner's
family for permanent display. It was really interesting to get up close and
cozy with the only fully complete and remaining one out of 100. I understand
there are two others left but not close to complete.

I asked JD's VP of Corporate Communication, Curtis Linke, how much JD had
paid for the Dain. I got a very direct answer from Curtis. "There are only
three people within the JD Corporation who know that amount and I'm not
going to tell you or anyone else"! End of that discussion. Had a very nice
visit with Curtis and the head of JD Archives as well, Vicki Eller. I came
away from these conversations, believing that these JD people really want to
revive the Collector Center and make it a vibrant place again. I'm not sure
they know exactly how to do that and I sure don't either but I think they
would entertain constructive suggestions.

There were a BUNCH of tractors there in 2001. I didn't bother to count
them. It was hot, dry, and dusty. I located some homemade ice cream,
found Ol' Rog in his tent, looked at the Dain in its tent, watched a
bunch of the pulls, and headed up to Ames to visit with some friends
before I got heatstroke.

Jim:

Thanks for the update. The year I went to the Waukee, IA swap meet, I
think
it was 1999, I heard that they had 700 or so tractors at the Ankeny
show. Is
that real or fiction? It is hard for me to imagine that many tractors at
one
show. I'm not sure we have that many antique tractors in the whole
state. In
fact I'm sure we don't!

It is (was?) held every two years. They moved it to Mt. Pleasant when
the
rent at Ankeny got too high. I went to it last year. It was pretty
disappointing, especially when compared with 2001
The website is http://www.tractorexpo.com/index01.html
There are pictures of most of the tractors at the last show on the
website.

I was at it in 2001. So was Rog. I didn't have time to think about
going
to it last year or the year before. If it isn't happening any more,
I'll
have to look for other diversions when I'm visiting relatives up that
way.

Does the Ankeny show still exist? I thought I had heard that show went
away!

When is Ankeny this year? (Just north of Des Moines.)

We have to be in NW Iowa again for a wedding June 12th. And then a High
School class reunion July 3. Don't want to stay at relatives that long
as
three days are our limit! :-) Thinking a bit about maybe chasing some
antique tractor shows between those dates. Noticed one in Ohio June
24th.
Anyone with some suggestions on shows in the Midwest between June 13th
and
July 1?
