George and Richard:
I agree.

I just rolled my H over (I am sure the H & M rotate the same way) to verify
for myself that it does indeed rotate CW as viewed from the front -- thus we
are all postulating that the nut should loosen if it is rotated CCW as
viewed from the front (i.e., the threads are normal. This agrees with Bob's
simple statement.

I should have been able to figure this out myself ... but sometimes external
input helps. I have family obligations for the rest of the day but hope to
try again tonight/tomorrow.

BTW George - I noticed that this nut is not visible on the H - I don't think
it would be even if there were no fan shroud. To see it when the pump is on
the tractor I think you'd almost have to remove the grille and radiator and
look pretty much straight into the center of the fan.

Thanks much -
Dudley

Here's input from someone who has no clue... but is willing to make an
educated guess. I looked at my M and couldn't even see the nut under the
pulleys, so I thought about it a bit. I only know of two reasons for a left
hand thread. For identification, like fittings on acetylene hoses, and to
keep nuts from loosening under normal rotation. Since rotation of the fan
shaft would tend to tighten the nut, I doubt it is left hand. Don't you
agree?

I don't know direction the nut should turn but i would say. the same
direction that the shaft turns. That way it would not be able to turn loose
when operating.
